Extras are the backbone of the entire entertainment industry. If you don't know the plight and the struggle of extras in TV shows and movies, this is your chance to learn. You show up at the break of dawn, (or earlier), you get last minute wardrobe changes, you're asked to change your hairstyle completely, including cutting it all off, for a few dollars more, you may walk across a scene fifty times and never even be able to catch a glimpse of yourself once the finished product is completed. Sound like fun? That's the life of extras.
It may sound like hell on earth for a person who really loves acting and wants to perform a truly challenging role, but extras don't really have it that bad. It's almost like getting paid for going to live acting school, with meals included, and the reality is that extras are the ones who give a project it's life and feel of being in a real place with real people. The principles often would seem empty and hollow were it not for the activities being played out by the background extras.
The pay is not the greatest for extras, and no-one has
ever gotten an Emmy or an Oscar for being a part of the
best group of extras in a major motion picture, but bear
in mind that even though you are extras today, if you give
it your all and really put yourself into the character you
are playing and the setting you are helping to create, you
could be noticed for that and be the big screen sensation
of tomorrow.
